In View

In this section you will find all our previous editions of In View. Each article (apart from the HBR syndicated article, which we cannot store online *) is referenced and searchable against the themes. We have covered a wide range of subjects, drawing on contributors from the NHS, other health systems and the private and not for profit sectors. Contributors have included leading thinkers interviewed exclusively for In View, and NHS leaders sharing their experience of some of the development opportunities on offer to them through the Institute. There is also a range of background reading to some of the tools and techniques we have developed, including a wealth of reading material supporting our work on whole board development. Current Issue

In View cover

The theme of our current issue is service redesign and improvement, seeing ways to achieve more in healthcare, but also looking at what has been achieved recently, even in a time of recession. Our main feature is on Daniel Goleman who is best known for his books Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ, and Social Intelligence: The New Science of Human Relationships. He talks about the role of emotional and social intelligence within healthcare organisations. The health of staff can often be overlooked − Dr Steve Boorman shows how investment in staff health can benefit the whole organisation. It's not just staff health that needs attention, but also any staff with innovative ideas need supporting. Dr Lynne Maher, the NHS Institute's interim director of innovation, is co-author of an executive guide that identifies seven key dimensions of culture that enable innovation. One man tasked with driving up quality across the NHS, is Jim Easton in his new role as NHS national director for improvement and efficiency. He is focusing efforts on redesigning patterns of care. One system that has proved a success in its first year, has been world class commissioning. Gary Belfield and Kate Dixon explain what we can learn from a co-production approach. Find out how Cambridge University Hospitals Foundation Trust keeps up its excellent performance. Pharmacist Mark Duman gives us his top 10 tips to networking. The country in focus this issue is Hungary. Despite continuous attempts at reform the healthcare system is still affected by its past. Steve Coomber discusses and reviews the book The Design of Business: Why Design Thinking is the Next Competitive Advantage by Roger Martin. And we find out why readers of Time magazine named Jonathan Ive, senior vice president of industrial design at Apple, as one of the 100 most influential people on the planet.
